The Mining Sector in Cameroon

Cameroon’s mining potential is increasingly rich and diversified. In the context of implementing strategies to sustainably support growth, the government has provided incentives for the development of the mining industry.

Main deposits known nationwide

The main deposits known nationwide includes:

  • Bauxite deposits in the Adamawa and West Regions;
  • Cobalt and nickel deposits in the Eastern Region;
  • Rutile and distene deposits in Central Region;
  • Gold deposits in the Adamawa, Far North, North, East and South Regions
  • Significant diamond clues in the Adamawa and South-West Regions
  • Two iron deposits have been identified in the Eastern and Southern Region
  • Tin deposits are exploited in the Adamawa Region
  • Sapphire deposits have been found in the Southwest and Adamawa Regions
  • Uranium deposit was discovered in the Northern Regio
  • Stone deposits for construction and ornamental materials (marble, sandstone, limestone, quartz, gneiss, diorite, gabbro, syenite, granite, etc.)

Obtaining a mining permit

Mining Permits in Cameroon is issued by the Ministry of Mines (MINMIDT) governed by law No. 2016/017 of 14th December 2016 instituting the mining code of Cameroon. This law has repealed the provisions of law No. 001 of 16th April 2001 which established the mining code and was amended and supplemented by law No. 2010/11 of 29th July 2010. 

The scope of a mining permit in Cameroon consists of the following

  1. Non-Industrial license and Non-Industrial Miner’s Card
  2. Reconnaissance Permit
  3. Exploration Permit
  4. License for semi-mechanized non-industrial mining of precious and semi-precious substances, mining agreement, mining permit regime, Oil and Gaz.
